A Local Credit Union That Cares

The Story of Wailuku Federal Credit Union

Wailuku FCU was known as Wailuku Community Federal Credit Union when it opened it's doors to central Maui in 1955. But it's story began years earlier in the vision of one local businessman: Manuel S. Molina.

Mr. Molina's Vision

Manuel Molina had been exposed to credit unions as an employee in the local pineapple industry, as many of the factory workers belonged to the industry credit union. He quickly saw a credit union’s potential to serve the greater community of Wailuku.

Mr. Molina met with the director of the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Federal Credit Union, and he researched to learn more about how a similar organization could help his Wailuku neighbors save money and follow their dreams. He then organized a committee of local business owners to officially apply for a federal charter for Wailuku Community Federal Credit Union, which was granted in January, 1955.

"Pay Your Loan, Have A Beer"

Later that year, the first Wailuku FCU office opened inside Mr. Molina's tavern, the White Spot Café, located on Wailuku’s Main Street. Mr. Molina served as the credit union’s first manager, treasurer, secretary, and bartender, and was fond of saying that the credit union was the "only place you could save money, pay your loan, and have a beer."

From those humble beginnings, though, we continued to grow. In 1970, Wailuku FCU broke ground on a new office at 175 N. Market Street in Wailuku, right next door to another Manuel S. Molina business, Molina's Bar. And, in 2014, we moved into our beautiful new facility at 133 Ma'a Street in Kahului, in the Maui Lani Village Center.

A Commitment To Our Core Values

Though we shortened our name (and no longer serve beer), we still live by our same founding mission statement: To make a positive difference in our community through dedication to our core values:

  • Social Responsibility: To make the community a better place
  • Honesty and Integrity: To do what is right for the members and the credit union
  • Relationships: To build connections through honesty and integrity, and by exceeding expectations
  • Service: To follow the credit union motto of "Not for profit, not for charity, but for service"
  • Education: To educate our staff in order to better educate our members

It’s truly been our pleasure to serve central Maui for over half a century. If you're looking for a local financial institution, we hope you'll join your friends and neighbors and consider becoming a WFCU member. And if you're already a member, welcome home.

I recently applied for a mortgage loan at Wailuku Federal Credit Union. The employees there were very helpful and knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Without their help I would not have been able to purchase my home. I highly recommend seeing them for your financing needs.
