Here’s what you should know before proceeding with a dispute:
1. Trial Offers
- Many trial offers automatically sign you up for other services when you accept their terms.
- If your charge is from a trial offer, do not file a dispute.
- Contact the merchant directly to request a credit — most will issue one within 30 days.
2. Unrecognized Charges
- Sometimes the business name on your statement may look different from the name you know.
- Review your recent purchases before filing a dispute.
- Common sources of confusion:
- Pop-up shops
- Food trucks
- Farmers markets
- Craft fairs
- Mobile payments
- Person to Person payments
- Filing a false dispute can lead to serious consequences, including fines, legal action, or losing account privileges.
3. Provisional Credit
- Once we receive the information we need, we’ll begin your dispute and issue provisional credit within 10 days.
- Under Regulation E, you may be responsible for the first $50 (or more in some cases).
- If our investigation shows no error, the provisional credit will be reversed.
- We’ll contact you if more time is needed, but disputes may take up to 90 days to complete.
